Full-time course load: A 12-credit hour load is the minimum required to be classified as a full-time student and may be necessary for students to receive financial aid benefits. Taking only 12 hours per semester would require additional classes (summer, for example) for students wishing to graduate in 4 years.

According to a report prepared by the city's Independent Budget Office, the cost of eliminating tuition at CUNY's seven community colleges would be $138-232 million per year, depending on factors like limiting the number of years covered or exclusively covering full-time students.

New York joined the free college movement in 2017 with the Excelsior Scholarship, which covers any in-state public college tuition not already covered by other sources for students with family incomes up to $125,000.

You can be required to repay the entire loan immediately and can be sued by either the school or the Federal Government to collect it. You can be charged all interest plus late payment fees, court fees and collection costs. You can be reported to credit bureaus and have your credit rating affected.

Collection Agencies. If bills remain unpaid for more than one term, the College reserves the right to forward a student's account to a Collection Agency. Once an account is referred to a Collection Agency, the student will be responsible for all collection costs plus what is owed to the College.

Since most CUNY schools are commuter-based, students don't have to pay for room and board and thus shoulder a lower overall cost.

How can you get a scholarship? ›

If you're looking at acceptance rate alone, then CUNY Bernard M Baruch College is more difficult to get into.

Make sure, if you are in high school, that you do well on SAT's and keep your GPA up. Hunter is one of the harder CUNY schools to get into. Also if you are a NY state student, you should aim to do well on your Regents. For transfers, make sure your GPA is at or above a 3.0, just to be on the safe side.
