Hurricane season runs from June to November, although the period in which they are most likely is from August to October. The city is far enough north and away from the coast not to be hit by hurricanes at their peak, however, heavy rains can result in flooding, as the James River widens into an estuary just downstream from the city.

In spring and autumn, from March to May and from September to November, the weather is variable. Spring is more unstable and rainier, while autumn is calmer.
At the end of May it can already be very hot, and in the first half of September there is often still summer-like heat.

The best periods to visit Richmond are spring and autumn, to avoid both the winter cold and the summer heat, and in particular, from mid-April to mid-May and from mid-September to mid-October. In April, it can sometimes get cold and the weather can be unstable, especially at the beginning of the month, while the second half of the month is generally mild.
In autumn (usually, around late October), you can admire the beautiful colors of the trees losing their leaves (the phenomenon called fall foliage).

What are the conditions for precipitation to occur? ›

For precipitation to happen, first tiny water droplets must condense on even tinier dust, salt, or smoke particles, which act as a nucleus. Water droplets may grow as a result of additional condensation of water vapor when the particles collide.

Does it have to be 32 degrees for freezing rain? ›

Basically, the difference between cold rain (relatively harmless) and freezing rain (very hazardous) all comes down to the surface temperature. If temperatures at the surface are at 32°F or less, any sort of precipitation, whether it be rain or snow will not melt.

Why do you need to heat for precipitation? ›

Generally, increasing temperature of a solution increases the solubility of the ionic compounds, improving the likelihood of precipitate formation.

What are the 5 steps of precipitation? ›

Together, these five processes - condensation, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, and evapotranspiration- make up the Hydrologic Cycle. Water vapor condenses to form clouds, which result in precipitation when the conditions are suitable.

What are the 4 main precipitation? ›
